A Scavenger Hunt!

Recently we were shown a range of Site Specific performance pieces in our seminar relating to pre-performance, performance and post-performance. One of these pieces that caught my attention was called SFMOMA Scavengers (2006). SFMOMA describe the performance as follows on their website:

“100 Clues. 50 Teams. $4K. SFMOMA teams up with British artist Joshua Sofaer to create the ultimate art scavenger hunt. With only nine hours and the seven-by-seven-mile area of San Francisco at their disposal, teams are invited to register, pack their maps, and set out from SFMOMA in search of fame and glory. The hunt will take place on Saturday, September 30, 2006. Sofaer will use the objects collected in the hunt as the basis for a three-day exhibition at SFMOMA. The exhibition runs Sunday, October 1, 2006 through Tuesday, October 3, 2006.” (2006)

This performance gave the audience an opportunity to participate rather than to spectate. The items they collected demonstrate their route in the performance and by documenting their collection as an exhibition, allowed the performance to continue after it had ended.

This performance gave me ideas of how something similar could take place at our museum venue and how it could encourage the audience to be more involved with the venue.
