Styles of text

After reading Tim Etchells ‘Certain Fragments’, I found it would be very useful to apply some of the techniques Etchells’ suggests. As our performance is all text based and is also a durational piece, the text is essential in making the public into an audience member and also the text explains and asks the public questions about feminism and how women are represented within a gallery. Etchells’ suggests writing as though one was in different scenarios.

During the writing process and rehearsal process of our performance I became aware the performance was not keeping an audience member intrigued as watching someone reading can become boring and repetitive.

I decided to create levels within my writings. I would have passages of text spoken and written as if I was telling a secret. This will aim to draw the public in as they would feel they are hearing something new and something that is exciting. I also have been incorporating into my text passages that have been written as though it is a public announcement, thus the writing is authoritative and powerful. This will create a different relationship with the public. I am continuing to explore different tones to use within my text to keep it diverse and interesting.
